The weather is improving, end of year concerts and activities are finishing up, and for many of you, the school year is soon ending. Whether you are spending the summer traveling, furthering your education, or planning for next school year, (or a combination of all these things), I hope the 2023-2024 school year was a good one for you all. Thank you to those of you who have sent pictures, written articles, and shared your teaching activities with us this year! If you have not taken the opportunity to contribute to TRIAD I hope you will take the time next school year to share your activities and ideas with our colleagues throughout the state of Ohio.
This issue of the TRIAD has tips on building your big band, fostering well-being in the general music classroom, and we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Ohio Band Director’s Association, which later developed into the thriving organization OMEA is today. We will have several milestones to celebrate over the next few years as we approach the 100th anniversary of the Ohio Music Education Association in 2032. We have seen tremendous growth in the organization, and I encourage you to get more involved and help us include a high-quality music education to our students throughout Ohio, whether in small or large districts, rural, suburban, or urban.
As I move into my second year as Editor of TRIAD, I would love to see a wealth of contributions from all areas of Music Education. If you are interested in becoming involved and seeking out quality content for TRIAD I’d love to have you become a member of the Editorial Board. We are looking for members in the band, choir, orchestra, and general music arenas to help us gather articles from all areas of the state, and all levels of education. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact me at editor_of_triad@omea-ohio.org - I’d love to have a diverse team working on making TRIAD an indispensable tool for educators.
If you are interested in contributing an article for next school year summer would be a great time to contribute something – it’s never too early! Whether you are sharing news and photos from your program, contributing an article – we want to hear from you! Here is a link to the TRIAD page on the website. Mrs. Hilary Patriok is currently in her 31st year of teaching, and her 10th year as Director of Instrumental Music at Westlake High School in Westlake, Ohio. She is a graduate of Baldwin-Wallace University Conservatory of Music and earned her MME from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.
In 2019 Ms. Patriok was awarded the Westlake Council of PTA Outstanding District Educator and was also named Exemplary Educator of the year for Westlake High School. Ms. Patriok is a member of Phi Beta Mu and ASBDA and also serves as an adjudicator for OMEA. She has served as host for the District IV large group event and President of District IV before her current role as Editor of TRIAD.
