The Kent State School of Music was thrilled to welcome almost 150 alumni to celebrate our shared accomplishments at our OMEA reception in February. We take tremendous pride in our alumni who are doing excellent work in classrooms across the country.
The students and faculty at Kent State continue to have a national and global impact on music education practice. Some of the alumni who came to our OMEA reception have graduated from the fully online Master of Music in Music Education program which boasts over 800 alumni representing all 50 states! Dr. Craig Resta recently presented a session on music education in the United States at University of Reading (England) and two sessions at the University of Pretoria (South Africa). He has also presented sessions about string pedagogy at Nelson Mandela University (South Africa) and a keynote at the South African Society for Music Teachers.

We are anticipating the publication of an article by Dr. Jay Dorfman in which he analyzed survey-based research in music education over the last 12 years. Dr. Dorfman’s research shows downward trends in response rates on a national scale.
Dr. Marshall continues to teach early childhood classes for infants and toddlers in Kent and presented a demonstration class and workshop on Early Childhood Music pedagogy in Cincinnati in March. He also presented at the National Organization of Kodály Educators in Chicago in March. He is one of the feature presenters for a NAfME general music panel virtual presentation presented to hundreds of members on April 26. Dr. Marshall continues to be on the leadership team and teach for the Gordon Institute for Music Learning. He will return to Seoul, South Korea, and teach a two-week teacher education course this August.
We are currently enrolling summer professional development students in Orff Teacher Education, Caribbean Steelband Pedagogy, and Choral/Instrumental Conducting. See specifics here.
