Kent State was well represented at the 2025 OMEA Professional Development Conference with 14 sessions and performances by current faculty and students. In addition, 9 current doctoral students presented their work at the Research Poster Session. Congratulations to all!
Our annual All-Star Band drew 200 students from over 40 schools throughout Ohio and Pennsylvania. The students collaborated with guest composer Michael Markowski and Kent State University faculty. The concert also included the world premiere of Markowski’s work, Ekklesia.

An article by Dr. Jay Dorfman was recently published in the Journal of Music, Technology, & Education. The article was the result of Dorfman’s research on learning goals in technology-based music classes throughout the U.S.
Dr. Butch Marshall made his first-ever appearance at the North Carolina Music Educators Association conference at Winston-Salem in November. He participated in a 4-person Active Approaches to General Music session and will present a similar session at the Organization of American Kodály Educators national conference in March, in Chicago. He is in his third and final year of presidency of the Gordan Institute for Music Learning, where he is excited to be helping to plan and teach their first international Professional Development workshop in Seoul, Korea, in August. Closer to home, look for information and registration for Professional Development courses at Kent this summer.
Dr. Craig Resta recently gave a talk at the University of Toronto as part of the Neville Austin Graduate Colloquium Series titled The Value of History is What Happens Tomorrow: Our Stories as Connection and Colloquy in Music Education. Dr. Resta also travels to the Education University Hong Kong this semester for guest lectures and conducting coaching.
The summer of 2024 brought several enhancements to the School of Music including a refreshed lobby and hallways. We are also thrilled to open the new Band Education Building where our band ensembles will be housed. We invite friends and alumni to stop by the campus and see our upgraded facilities!
