Brian Stevens,
President
Spring is upon us, and with it the conclusion of the 2024-25 school year! I hope that you are able to look back with fond memories of a successful year and many wonderful musical moments! With the end of the school year comes new possibilities and opportunities!
By the time you read this, we will have new leadership throughout OMEA at the district, region and state levels. I want to welcome these newly-elected officers to their leadership positions and wish them well as they begin a wonderful servant leadership journey.
The 2025 Professional Development Conference was a huge success! Congratulations to all of the performers, clinicians and participants for making the 2025 Conference one of the best ever! A huge THANK YOU goes out to Executive Director Jay Wardeska, Director on Professional Development Mark Hensler, Director of Business Affairs and Trade Show Operations Bill Wittman and Director of Technology, Nicholas Turon for their tireless work and dedicated leadership!
Now is the time to take the opportunity to participate in the 2026 Conference in Columbus. May 31st is the deadline for clinic proposals, performance applications, and All-State auditions. See the OMEA website for All-State Audition Information and for information about presenting or performing at the 2026 Conference.
During our time at the 2025 Conference, we had great discussions as a State Board. I want to thank all of the District & Region Officers and Committee Chairs for their dedicated leadership! Our discussions resulted in the identification of three important opportunities:
Mentoring our newest teachers to sustain the music teacher profession.
We recognize the critical role that mentorship plays in shaping the journeys of new educators. It is vital that we support teachers during their first five years of service. Our mentorship initiatives are designed to provide guidance, foster professional growth, and encourage innovative teaching methods. We strive to connect experienced educators with early-service teachers to create a network of support and shared wisdom. Learn more about OMEA Mentorship.
Advocating for Music Education
Advocacy remains a cornerstone of our work. As music teachers, we are not just educators; we are champions of the arts in our schools and communities. OMEA is committed to advocating for policies that strengthen music programs in our schools. We encourage all members to become active voices in their communities, promoting the benefits of music education and its profound impact on students’ cognitive and emotional development. Ensuring Equitable Access to Music Education
Equitable access to music education is a fundamental right for every student in Ohio and the fundamental mission of OMEA. We are working diligently to bridge the gap in resources and opportunities across the state. By fostering an inclusive environment, we aim to inspire every child to explore their musical potential, regardless of their background.
Looking Forward to New Opportunities
As we move forward, let us continue to collaborate, innovate, and advocate for the future of music education in Ohio. Together, we can create a vibrant and inclusive musical landscape that enriches the lives of our students and strengthens our communities.
Thank you for your dedication and commitment to music education! Have a wonderful end to your school year and a relaxing Summer!
