Nathan Stowe is in his 19th year of teaching and 11th year at Pickerington High School Central serving as Director of Bands as well as Department Chair for the performing Arts at PHSC. His service to OMEA includes hosting Large Group Contest, Large Group music selection committee and assistant host for Pickerington Band Fest. Mr Stowe is an active member of the Brass Band of Columbus and local musician.
The Pickerington High School Central Band Program's mission statement is "Service through Musicianship". In addition to all of our program accomplishments we believe that all students can use their talents to serve their community either through music or various service projects. Evidence of this can be seen in our continued partnership with The Ronald McDonald House Charity and other local humanitarian efforts such as the Stowe Mission on Parsons Ave in Columbus, Ohio.
Musicians have been called to become music educators for a multitude of reasons. Regardless of our personal motivations we all share a belief that music is for everyone regardless of program size, quality, or funding. In addition to teaching quality content supported by affective pedagogy, we are also responsible for creating a stable community for our students to learn and grow.
OMEA functions in a similar capacity for our local community of music educators. It is my belief we all seek the same type of support we provide for our own students. Over the years I've fostered my own support system of trusted colleagues - people I have come to rely on for musical "reality checks", or to listen to my concerns without judgement, to provide mentorship for my own program, and am able to rely on if I need borrow a tuba or drum for a special event.
I would love the opportunity to continue to foster the type of community and support we all seek from our friends and colleagues in D15.
