The Muskingum University Department of Music is pleased to welcome several new studio faculty to our ranks this year. These include Dr. Whitney Davis, trumpet; Eric Kline, violin/viola; Joseph Mueller, cello; Dr. Corey Rubin, composition; Alex Shinn, bass; and Justin White, tuba/euphonium.
This fall, Muskingum welcomed over 200 high school students from across the region to campus for three day-long events: String Fling, Choral YouthFest, and Instrumental YouthFest. Students participated in masterclasses, workshops, rehearsals, and performances with Muskingum faculty and students.
In January, the department welcomed an additional 75 students to campus for the first rehearsal of the inaugural Muskingum Valley Youth Wind Ensemble (MVYWE). The MVYWE gives talented high school instrumentalists an opportunity to perform with an advanced group and Muskingum music students an opportunity to cultivate skills in planning, coaching, and conducting. The ensemble will rehearse twice a month through the spring semester and perform on a concert with the Muskingum Bands in late April.
The edited collection including Dr. Erin Bauer’s chapter on the Chicano movement in South Texas, At the Crossroads of Music and Social Justice (Indiana University Press, 2023), was recently awarded the Ellen Koskoff Edited Volume Prize for outstanding edited collection of essays in ethnomusicology and honorable mention for the Bruno Nettl Prize for outstanding publication in the history of ethnomusicology by the Society for Ethnomusicology.
