Across Ohio, there is a quiet but significant disconnect.
In homes throughout our communities, musical instruments sit unused—stored away in closets, in basements, or collecting dust in attics. At the same time, in schools across the state, there are students who want to participate in music programs but lack access to an instrument.
Music Matters Ohio is designed to bridge that gap.
This statewide initiative—led through a partnership of the Ohio Music Education Association, the Ohio Foundation for Music Education, the Ohio Alliance for Arts Education, and the Ohio Arts Council—focuses on a simple but powerful idea: connect unused instruments with students who are ready to learn.
What Is Happening
What Is Happening
Music Matters Ohio is launching a coordinated, statewide instrument collection drive that invites individuals, families, and communities to donate new or gently used musical instruments of any kind—band, orchestra, percussion, and even keyboards.
On Saturday, May 30, 2026 with additional drop-off opportunities available across regions, Ohioans are encouraged to bring instruments to local collection sites. These sites are strategically organized by OMEA volunteers to ensure accessibility across the state, allowing broad participation from both urban and rural communities.
This is not a one-time event—it is the beginning of a sustainable, repeatable model designed to continue growing over time.
How It Works
How It Works
The strength of Music Matters Ohio lies in its mission. This is not simply a donation drive—it is a coordinated system designed to ensure that instruments move efficiently and responsibly from donors to students.
The process unfolds in four key steps:
1. Community Donation
Individuals/organizations donate instruments they no longer use. These may be instruments that have been outgrown, replaced, or simply left behind over time.
2. Collection and Evaluation
Instruments are gathered at regional collection points and evaluated for condition and suitability. This step ensures that instruments placed into schools are appropriate for student use.
3. Refurbishment
When necessary, instruments are cleaned, repaired, and restored to playable condition. This work is essential—not just to extend the life of the instrument, but to ensure that students receive something they can be successful with from the start.
4. Distribution to Schools
Instruments are then distributed directly to music educators, who place them into the hands of students who need them most. This final step is intentional—teachers know their students, their programs, and where the need exists.
Why This Matters
Why This Matters
The impact of this work goes far beyond the instrument itself.
When a student gains access to an instrument, they gain access to an entire experience—one that builds confidence, discipline, creativity, and a sense of belonging. Music programs create connections. They give students a place to succeed, to contribute, and to be part of something larger than themselves.
And yet, access is not equal.
In many communities—particularly those facing economic challenges—students are unable to participate simply because they cannot obtain an instrument. Music Matters Ohio directly addresses that barrier.
It also strengthens programs. Directors are able to say “yes” to more students. Programs become more inclusive. Communities become more engaged.
A Statewide Effort
A Statewide Effort
What makes Music Matters Ohio particularly powerful is its scale.
This is not a single organization’s project—it is a coordinated, statewide effort supported by partners who bring different strengths to the work: advocacy, funding, logistics, and direct connection to schools and educators.
It is also a community-driven effort. The success of this initiative depends on participation from individuals across Ohio—people who are willing to look at an instrument they no longer use and recognize its potential to change a student’s life.
How to Get Involved
How to Get Involved
Participation is simple:
- Donate a new or gently used instrument
- Encourage others to do the same
- Share information within your school and community
- Help identify students who could benefit
The Bigger Picture
At its core, Music Matters Ohio is about access.
It is about removing a barrier that has existed for far too long—and doing so in a way that is practical, scalable, and sustainable.
It is also a reminder of something we see every day in music education:
Opportunity matters.
Access matters.
And sometimes, all it takes is placing the right instrument into the right student’s hands at the right time.
Because music matters—and so do students.
